September 2002 Biseks go to Washington Brad Bryan News-Leader Editor
The Bisek's Polka Band from Independence will be um-pa-pa-ing for a brand new audience when they travel to Washington D.C. to play on September 21 and 22. Former Wisconsin Congressman, Steve Gunderson arranged the- mini-tour after speaking with the Bisek's at their Fourth of July performance at Pleasantville, a standing gig which they have held for the past 25 years. Saturday, the group will play at a local festival and on Sunday they will perform at the Lutheran Church of which Gunderson is a member. Gunderson also took care of all of the arrangements for the seven-member band. Calista Gingrich, wife of Newt Gingrich, is making sure the band has plenty to do and see when they are not playing by arranging several exclusive Washington D.C. tours. LaVern Bisek has been playing the accordion since the age of 14. He started his first band at the age of 19. A few years later, when he met his wife Karen, the Bisek Polka Band was formed. Other additions came later. Daughter Nancy plays saxophone and sings, daughter Kim, provides vocals, two grandchildren Dylan and Danielle Schank play along as well. The one non-relative, Independence Police Chief, Dave Galewski, has been play ing tuba with the band for the past 35 years. The Biseks play weddings, church services, festivals and have even played a funeral. They will be playing a wedding one week after their return..
